STEM Mavericks offers a dynamic introduction to engineering, programming, and AI, aiming to ignite students' passions and guide them toward exciting, technology-driven careers.

 

Overview

STEM Mavericks is a two-week summer camp designed for students in grades 10-12. Students will have access to STEM kits containing all necessary hardware and software during the camp. After the camp, each student will receive their own STEM kit to continue advancing their STEM skills and exploring career pathways in technology. 

The camp will take place on the NMSU Main Campus in Las Cruces, NM, and will include field trips to various campus departments.

Camp Schedule

  • Monday-Friday, June 1-12, 2026, from 12:00–5:00 PM
  • Camp staff must be present during camp sessions, arriving before the session starts and staying afterward for cleanup or preparation as needed, approximately 11:30 am – 5:30 pm.

Staff Positions

We are looking for camp Instructors and Teaching Assistants (TAs) to make this another great year of camp!

Instructors

We’re looking for high school teachers to support camp facilitation and to grow a STEM Mavericks network. You should be excited about trying and introducing new technologies to students and colleagues. Instructors will support campers in designing and trouble-shooting their engineering projects during camp. Experience with coding languages and engineering projects is helpful, but a willingness to learn is essential.

A new requirement this year is for instructors to create a personalized lesson plan to integrate STEM Mavericks topics into your classroom instruction. Support will be provided before, during, and after the camp to facilitate this process.

Instructor Responsibilities and Duties

Pre-Camp Training

  • Attend 3 mandatory professional learning days in Spring 2026 (dates TBD).
  • Familiarize yourself with the camp curriculum before the start of the camp.

Camp Instruction

  • Co-plan and co-lead sessions with another certified instructor or NMSU faculty member.
  • Adapt teaching methods and materials to meet students’ interests and learning styles.
  • Facilitate engaging, hands-on camps for grades 10–12.
  • Encourage exploration, creativity, and curiosity among campers.
  • Guide students in exploring learning opportunities and career paths.
  • Maintain a clean and organized classroom.
  • Create a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment in line with the Camp Code of Conduct.
  • Manage student behavior and contact camp staff in case of emergencies or disciplinary issues.
  • Collaborate with instructors, camp staff, and stakeholders to ensure successful camp implementation.

Post-Camp Lesson Plan Development

  • Create a lesson plan to integrate the STEM Mavericks concepts and/or topics into your regular classroom instruction.
  • Attend 1-2 lesson planning work sessions after the camp concludes (dates TBD).
  • Submit your finished lesson plan (using the provided template) to the STEM Mavericks staff by mid-July 2026 (date TBD).

Qualifications and Skills

Seeking Instructors with the following Qualifications and Skills:

  • Proven experience as an instructor.
  • Knowledge and experience in coding languages and AI.
  • Classroom management skills.
  • Ability to implement lesson plans and instruct in various modalities.
  • Effective communication and the ability to explain complex ideas clearly.
  • Active listening skills to address students' diverse learning needs.
  • Understanding of learning psychology, styles, and strategies.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Commitment to instructing all camp sessions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • NM Level I, II, or III teacher certification (or equivalent)
  • Experience teaching grades 10–12 (open to experienced middle school teachers)
  • CPR and First Aid certification

Instructor Compensation

  • Pay: $3,000 to be paid in 3 installments upon completion of the following activities:
    • Pre-camp training: $600
    • Camp instruction: $1800
    • Post-camp lesson plan development: $600
  • Note: Payments will be processed at the end of the camp and may take up to four business weeks.
  • Materials: Instructors will receive a STEM Mavericks kit and the curriculum during the pre-camp training.
  • Lunch and snacks are provided daily during the camp.

Teaching Assistants (TAs)

We’re looking for college students studying computer science, electrical engineering, and/or artificial intelligence. You should be excited about helping younger students explore these topics. TAs will support campers in designing and trouble-shooting their engineering projects during camp. Experience with programming languages and engineering projects is essential.

TA Responsibilities and Duties

  • Attend mandatory professional learning days in Spring 2026 (dates TBD).
  • Familiarize yourself with the camp curriculum before the start of the camp.
  • Support NMSU faculty and K-12 teachers with instruction during camp sessions.
  • Adapt teaching methods to meet students’ interests and learning styles.
  • Facilitate engaging, hands-on camps for grades 10–12.
  • Encourage exploration, creativity, and curiosity among campers.
  • Guide students in exploring learning opportunities and career paths.
  • Maintain a clean and organized classroom.
  • Create a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment in line with the Camp Code of Conduct.
  • Monitor student behavior and contact camp instructors or staff in case of emergencies or disciplinary issues.
  • Collaborate with instructors, camp staff, and stakeholders to ensure successful camp implementation.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience tutoring, teaching, and/or mentoring others.
  • Effective communication and the ability to explain complex ideas clearly.
  • Active listening skills to address students' diverse learning needs.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Commitment to instructing all camp sessions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • NMSU graduate or undergraduate student studying Computer Science, Engineering, or a related degree
  • Experience working with students in grades 10–12
  • Familiarity with learning psychology, styles, and strategies
  • CPR and First Aid certification

TA Compensation

  • Pay: upon completion of pre-camp training and camp instruction
    • Undergraduate Students: $1,275
    • Graduate Students: $1,700
  • Note: Payments will be processed at the end of the camp and may take up to four business weeks.
  • Lunch and snacks are provided daily during the camp.
